Robert Brewer Young, luthier

2007

Robert Brewer Young is a American luthier now living in France. The 'golden spiral' in the logo is used in the Renaissance geometric techniques that Robert has applied to making violins, violas and cellos. The spirals are suggestive of the scrolls of the instruments, while their relationship suggests the relationship of one instrument to another. Together they form an abstract leter Y.

2006

DRAM is a scholarly online collection of recordings of the works of 20th century
American composers. The circles in the logo suggest each element present in the name:
the soundwaves of music; the circular media of tapes, LPs and discs; the overlapping
categories of a database; and even (most obliquely) the stripes of the American flag.

2006

Soja is a new martial arts studio starting up in the San Francisco Bay Area. The client wanted
to create a lively, vibrant identity while still communicating traditional martial arts attributes.

2005

Logo for the institue shows two neurons firing (dancing?), in Berkeley school colors, no less...

2005

Logo for the web-application design consultant practice I have in conjunction with Zoe Keating.
In finding a way to join the K and the R, I had fun expressing various aspects of our relationship
(for example the fact that she is left-handed and has red hair).

2005

San Francisco-based event consultants.

2003

Logo for the well-known environmental and social change web site, designed to fit the banner space.
Like an animated film striip, the logo shows the hoped-for transformation of the world over time.
(Recently redesigned with the release of their new book.)

2004

A UC Berkeley outreach program connecting local children to their environment
through field trips around the San Francisco Bay.

2002

UC Berkeley Alumni Development (fundraising) web application/database.
in this logo, the computer screen becomes a rolodex. I also consulted on the application
architecture and created the screen layouts of the system itself.

1997

Startup card company. The logo tries to plays on the theme of "eye popping"
as well a physical explosion, without being too literal about it.

1994

The "new media" wing of respected New York design firm Waters Design.
I like the way the WNM forms the symbol for waters.

1991

Speculative design for a San Francisco eyeglasses shop. Unfortunately, never used.

1991

Designed for an innovative skateboard components company.
The graphic tries to convey earthquake shock waves, as well as the motion of wheels.
Still in use after 15 years.

1990

Berkeley landscape architecture firm.
The black and white version was designed to be stamped on drawings.

1990

Logo for an independent film company. Designed to be shown on a black
background during film credits, and to be animated.

1989

The first logo I ever got paid for, for a San Francisco law office. I still like it.
